With no seat available at Red Bull, Pierre was sent to compete in Japanese Super Formula — one of the most demanding single-seater championships in the world. He took two wins and three podiums, finishing just 0.5 points from the title (the final race was cancelled due to a typhoon). Mid-season, he was called back by Toro Rosso to replace Daniil Kvyat in Formula 1.

The highlight came at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix — a second place after a memorable last-lap duel with Lewis Hamilton at Interlagos. At 23 years and 9 months, he became the youngest French driver to stand on an F1 podium, breaking Jean Alesi's record by two years. The nickname "The Comeback Kid" was born.

On 6 September 2020, at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Pierre took his first Formula 1 victory under the Scuderia AlphaTauri colours. He became the 109th different winner in F1 history and the first French driver to win a Grand Prix since Olivier Panis at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix — a 24-year wait. He closed the season 10th in the standings with 75 points, becoming in the process the all-time highest points scorer in Scuderia AlphaTauri history.

He also won the "Driver of the Day" fan vote on multiple occasions, and remains to this day the highest points scorer in the history of the Faenza-based team.
